Samith Sandaruwan, OMI – I would like to share my missionary calling. Before entering seminary, I heard about and observed the Oblates working in Sri Lanka and read books about their overseas missionary work. After graduating from high school, I cherished the desire to become an Oblate missionary, and God made that dream come true.
I arrived in Japan on March 15, 2024. Before coming to Japan, I was involved in missionary work in Sri Lanka for six months. Although it was a short time, it was beneficial for the mission in Japan. I believe my calling is a blessing from God, and I have been chosen to live it out. In particular, the verse from the Bible, “The Lord has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor,” encourages me and motivates me to experience the calling I have received. God has anointed me not only to preach good news but also to be “good news.” I believe this is a special calling I have received.
It has been a year since I came to Japan (Fukuoka). For me, my mission in this country is to make Jesus Christ known to those who do not know Him, especially the poor. The dedication of the missionaries working in Japan is intriguing and encouraging. Their presence deepens understanding of the Catholic Church, and by making Jesus Christ visible in Japan, I feel like the seeds of Christian values are being sown. I believe that Oblates are collaborators of Jesus Christ, following in the footsteps of the apostles. It is therefore crucial that we continue the good work they began.
I am grateful for the encouragement and support of the Koga Oblate Community and Koga Church. You have helped me in many ways, not only to learn the Japanese language but also Japanese culture. I am grateful for your love and concern. I intend to cherish the calling I have received during my missionary journey in Japan. I hope that God will continue to bless and watch over me in my weakness. I also pray that Mary will intercede before God so that I may fulfill my mission as a missionary.
